As part of their sustainability journey, Bob W have partnered with Furthr to measure their footprint, take active steps to reduce their emissions and engage Bobstars in the process - each employee has access to the Furthr Engagement Platform to learn how to reduce their own footprint and fund reforestation projects in areas that need it the most, and get awarded more trees planted on special occasions!

Leading by example, Bob W has also worked with Furthr to develop a new GHG emissions breakdown per night, enabling guests to make informed decisions when choosing where to stay, and the team voted on 3 amazing nature projects to offset the emissions from all guest stays in 2024.

Sustainability Manifesto

Bob W announce their sustainability manifesto and explain how they are rethinking sustainability in hospitality. Commitments include local sourcing, ecologically responsible partnerships and working towards zero waste.

First Measurement

Bob W measured their carbon footprint for the first time for 2020. Following this, the focus turned to implementing ways to reduce emissions in the first place. Bob W also challenged the hospitality industry to "show their numbers!" and allow guests to understand the emissions for a night away.

Apr 2021

First Offset

Bob W double offset the emissions from nights stayed at all aparthotels in 2020 by supporting verified climate action projects. This means that twice as much carbon was removed from the air as Bob W emitted in 2020.

May 2021

Second Measurement

Bob W continued to grow and measured emissions again in 2022, now with over 400 rooms! Bob W made sustainability commitments including improved energy efficiency, cutting down on waste and responsibly sourcing materials.

Second Offset

Emissions from all stays were offset by supporting quality climate action projects. This means that a night spent with Bob W in 2022 was carbon neutral.

LEED Platinum Achievement

Bob W Koti Katajanokka in Helsinki achieved 89 points in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for its energy efficient building design, earning a Platinum rating and the highest score in the European Union!

The Problem

In Scotland, large areas that were once covered in trees have been replaced by other ecosystems, like heathlands, often resulting in less carbon sequestration, and lower biodiversity. Now, ancient woodlands - those that have existed since at least AD 1600 and have developed irreplaceable, complex ecosystems - cover only 1% of the country. Native woodlands are not doing much better, covering just 4%.

The Solution

The project will increase carbon capture and biodiversity near Loch Ness and Loch Mhor, through the creation of 63 hectares of new native woodland. The woodland will serve as an expansion of nearby ancient native woodlands. Since herbivores like deer, with no natural predators left, can harm forest ecosystems and prevent natural forest regeneration, both the new trees and the existing forest will be fenced.

The Problem

Home emissions, primarily coming from heating and electricity use, account for almost a quarter of the UK’s total carbon emissions. The government’s advisory body has stated that the UK will not meet its emissions targets “without near complete decarbonisation of the housing stock”, but inefficiencies in older houses represent a significant barrier.

The Solution

The project addresses climate change and fuel poverty by funding the affordable retrofitting of UK housing stock. This includes: - Adding insulation to homes to prevent heat loss. - Improving the efficiency of, or replacing, central heating components. To ensure additionality, the project targets social housing and households which could not afford retrofit investments. The monitoring period is set to 7 years, to ensure that the credits account for possible changes in government budgeting.

The Problem

The regions of Assam and Odisha face severe ecological challenges due to unsustainable agricultural practices and the vulnerability of monocultures to climate threats. Traditional burning and decay of biomass not only waste potential carbon sequestration opportunities but also contribute to local pollution and loss of biodiversity.

The Solution

The project only uses agricultural waste streams that are usually left to decay or burned in open fields (bamboo, woody trimmings, corn cobs, rice straw, etc) to transform agricultural waste into a valuable resource. Surplus biomass is heated in soil pits in a low-oxygen environment, a process called pyrolysis, that prevents the carbon from turning into carbon dioxide and escaping into the atmosphere. The end product is biochar, a highly stable carbonized material, which is then mixed with manure and added to soil, where it acts as a fertiliser and remains stable for a long time. The project aims to improve local ecosystems, boost farmers' incomes, and achieve substantial carbon sequestration.

The Problem

Over 60% of Europe’s forests are at risk of the effects of climate change and especially monoculture forests, which face increased repercussions from storms, droughts and pests. In Germany alone, there are more than 3 million hectares of monocultures that need to be turned into biodiverse mixed forests to increase their climate resilience and increase biodiversity and carbon capture.

The Solution

With the Lake Kessel climate protection project, Pina Earth is converting 93 hectares of pine monoculture forest in Brandenburg into a near-natural, biodiverse mixed forest over 30 years. The introduction of new species, the promotion of natural rejuvenation and the adapted game management make the forest more resistant to the consequences of climate change such as storms, drought and beetle infestation.

The Problem

Over 21 million people in Uganda are without access to clean water. Communities often rely on unsafe wells, lakes and other open water sources that are highly susceptible to contamination. Community groups own many existing boreholes across Uganda that have fallen into disrepair because maintenance programmes have been poorly managed or have proven too expensive.

The Solution

The Lango Safe Water project aims to resolve this issue by restoring existing boreholes and providing training for their continued maintenance. In addition to improved access to clean water, this will serve to reduce the emissions associated with boiling water to sanitise it. The initiative also addresses gender inequality and has become the first ever Gold Standard Gender Responsive certification project.
