NCO is now on the path to becoming a Carbon Neutral Business, with the aim of supporting a cultural shift in their workforce’s climate education and engagement. Using the GHG protocol, NCO has worked with Furthr on calculating and offsetting their scope 1-3 emissions as a first step on this journey.

Alongside this, the NCO team is driving bottom-up change, by delivering personal sustainability to each member of the company, as well as sponsoring reforestation for all staff members. As part of their measurement and mitigation strategy, NCO is also investing in highest quality carbon offsets to account for their 2022 emissions.

Portfolio Deep Dive

The Problem

With a rapidly expanding economy and population, India is in dire need of a reliable and sustainable energy supply to facilitate economic growth and mitigate escalating pollution levels. The country is also a major producer and consumer of both dairy and rice, with the dairy industry in particular having a significant impact on global warming.

The Solution

The dairy company Chanakya Dairy Products are lowering their environmental impact by switching their boiling system from fossil fuel to a renewable biomass steam boiler that runs on rice husks.

The Problem

Colombia's energy sector faces significant challenges, including reliance on fossil fuels and the need for diversification to ensure a reliable energy supply. Despite efforts, the energy mix still leans heavily on non-renewable sources. This reliance on energy sources which damage the environment also contributes to habitat degradation and loss of biodiversity, impacting local wildlife and plant species.

The Solution

By harnessing the natural flow of the Barroso River, this run-of-river plant contributes approximately 131 GWh of clean energy annually to the National Interconnected System. This initiative reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 51,535 tonnes per year, demonstrating a viable path towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels and advancing Colombia's commitments to renewable energy and climate change mitigation.

The Problem

Over 21 million people in Uganda are without access to clean water. Communities often rely on unsafe wells, lakes and other open water sources that are highly susceptible to contamination. Community groups own many existing boreholes across Uganda that have fallen into disrepair because maintenance programmes have been poorly managed or have proven too expensive.

The Solution

The Lango Safe Water project aims to resolve this issue by restoring existing boreholes and providing training for their continued maintenance. In addition to improved access to clean water, this will serve to reduce the emissions associated with boiling water to sanitise it. The initiative also addresses gender inequality and has become the first ever Gold Standard Gender Responsive certification project.
