Mitigating for unavoidable emissions

A carbon offset is a mechanism by which a company can compensate for its unavoidable emissions.

Furthr's offsets come in two forms:

Carbon Reduction Offsets, where we protect nature & fund technologies that drive carbon reduction.
Carbon Removal Offsets, where we fund nature and tech-based projects which remove emissions from the atmosphere.

Furthr's Due Diligence and Independent Verification

Furthr's in-house due diligence process rigorously assesses each project for its long-term impact (permanence), unique contribution to carbon reduction (additionality), and broader environmental, social, and economic benefits and safeguards (co-benefits).

We also carefully consider potential unintended negative impacts (leakage) and ensure robust greenhouse gas reduction calculations for the integrity and effectiveness of our projects. The latter is done by ensuring third-party auditing and governance are robustly managed by project developers, who themselves have experience and track record in delivering the highest quality carbon projects.

In our commitment to ensure the highest quality of carbon offsets, we collaborate with leading third-party agencies such as BeZero, Sylvera, and CCQI. These agencies specialize in meticulously evaluating carbon offset projects, offering an additional layer of validation to our selection process.

Projects Supported

The Problem

In Senegal, the conventional crop intensification model has proven inadequate, jeopardizing livelihoods, degrading soils, contributing to biodiversity loss, and aggravating the effects of climate change. Peanut monocropping has led to adverse environmental and economic impacts. The Ndankou and Patte Forests, despite successful past management, face threats such as encroaching peanut farming and reduced forest cover.

The Solution

The Senegal program seeks to restore as much of the 30,000 hectares of degraded land surrounding the forests as possible, starting with 6,000 farming families each with one hectare. By rehabilitating degraded lands, implementing sustainable practices, and fostering community ownership, the program aims to contribute to the long-term richness and sustainability of the Gambia River Watershed.

The Problem

In recent decades, coastal areas of Southern Kenya have been urbanised at unprecedented rates and mangrove forests converted to other land uses. These are the least developed regions of the country where communities are most dependent on mangrove ecosystems for employment, livelihood, and nutrition.

The Solution

EarthLungs is restoring the mangrove forests with the goal of empowering coastal community to break the cycle of poverty. In restoring the estuary, which is rich in biodiversity, this project will provide fishing grounds and help to create additional income streams. The restored forests will also act as a line of defense against storm surges.

The Problem

Ankarafantsika National Park is one of Madagascar’s largest dry deciduous forests. The primary causes of forest degradation at Ankarafantsika are human driven extraction for charcoal production and land clearing for agriculture. Much of this site has been severely degraded. However, healthy, old-growth forest remains nearby, making this a critical area for restoration and protection.

The Solution

ARC's 'Employ to Restore' initiative, in partnership with Red Island Restoration, is empowering communities to restore Ankarafantsika National Park. Restoration efforts focus on reforesting abandoned farmland and grasslands to reduce fire risks and support ecological recovery. By planting native, resilient species, the project enhances forest regeneration while creating sustainable employment for local communities.
