The Problem

Agriculture is the backbone of Rwanda’s economy accounting for one third of the national GDP. However, the hillsides have been farmed extensively leading to soil erosion and a loss of vital top-soil. This lack of trees on hillsides, where they would hold soil in place, has led to landslides.

The Solution

One Acre Fund is partnering with the Rwandan Government and local farmers to promote and verify sustainable agroforestry in Rwanda. This program involves equipping smallholder farmers with the finance, skills, and expertise to improve productivity, soil health, and climate resilience of their crops.

The Problem

In Senegal, the conventional crop intensification model has proven inadequate, jeopardizing livelihoods, degrading soils, contributing to biodiversity loss, and aggravating the effects of climate change. Peanut monocropping has led to adverse environmental and economic impacts. The Ndankou and Patte Forests, despite successful past management, face threats such as encroaching peanut farming and reduced forest cover.

The Solution

The Senegal program seeks to restore as much of the 30,000 hectares of degraded land surrounding the forests as possible, starting with 6,000 farming families each with one hectare. By rehabilitating degraded lands, implementing sustainable practices, and fostering community ownership, the program aims to contribute to the long-term richness and sustainability of the Gambia River Watershed.

The Problem

In recent decades, coastal areas of Southern Kenya have been urbanised at unprecedented rates and mangrove forests converted to other land uses. These are the least developed regions of the country where communities are most dependent on mangrove ecosystems for employment, livelihood, and nutrition.

The Solution

EarthLungs is restoring the mangrove forests with the goal of empowering coastal community to break the cycle of poverty. In restoring the estuary, which is rich in biodiversity, this project will provide fishing grounds and help to create additional income streams. The restored forests will also act as a line of defense against storm surges.

The Problem

Coastal communities in Eastern Africa are dependent on the mangrove ecosystems for employment, livelihood, and nutrition. In recent decades, these coastal areas have been urbanised at unprecedented rates. Mangrove forests were converted into other land use. Coupled with lack of effective governance, mangroves were overexploited and over-harvested. The destruction of the mangrove forests also contributed to the loss of critical habitats for many organisms. Threatening the livelihoods of these impoverished communities, pushing them further into poverty.

The Solution

The project is a community-driven initiative aimed at restoring and protecting mangrove forests along the coasts of Tanzania, as well as neighbouring coastal plots in Kenya. In restoring the mangrove estuary, which is rich in biodiversity, this project will provide fishing grounds for local people. This helps to create additional income streams, including sustainable harvests from the mangrove forests. The restored forests will also help to stabilise coastlines. This will act as a vital line of defence to protect the land and the communities during tropical storms.
