About this Project
The Problem
Vichada's vast savannas have been locked in cycles of low-productivity cattle grazing maintained by systematic burning since the 1970s. The region's acidic soils, remote location, lack of economic incentives, and weak enforcement of environmental regulations have produced large-scale land degradation, negligible carbon stocks, and biodiversity loss — including decline of 42 threatened species — with no commercially viable pathway to forest restoration under business-as-usual conditions.
The Solution
The project reforests degraded savanna grasslands across 10,260 ha using E. pellita as a soil-restoration nurse species alongside native species including Aceite, Congrio, Macano, Cedro, and Jacarandá. E. pellita rehabilitates severely degraded, acidic soils — accelerating litter inputs, improving water infiltration, and fostering microbial recovery — before systematic transition to native forest composition through enrichment planting and natural regeneration. The project targets 30,000+ ha expansion over the 30-year crediting period and aims for eventual Civil Society Natural Reserve designation under Colombia's SINAP.
