Fact File
⚡ On average, 35,369 MWh of electricity is generated onsite per year, and 57,537,579 m³ of LFG is sent to customers via the dedicated pipeline.
💼 Women are employed in leadership and decision-making positions in the project.
🚚 Some of the biomethane is used by the project developers to power the vehicles that collect waste!

About this Project
The Problem
São Paulo is Brazil’s most populated city, and produces a huge amount of municipal solid waste: around 20,000 metric tons per day.
Landfills are the 3rd largest producer of methane, a potent short-lived climate pollutant. Instead of letting landfill gases do to waste, they can be used to generate electricity.
The Solution
At one of São Paulo’s landfills, the “Central de Tratamento de Resíduos Leste – CTL”, landfill gas (LFG) is collected, preventing its release into the atmosphere where it would contribute to global warming.
After collection and cleaning, the LFG is used to generate electricity for use onsite and on the national grid. Excess LFG is sent to customers through a dedicated pipeline where it is also used for electricity generation.
