About this Project
The Problem
The Frenkentäler Managed Forest Climate Project is a 30-year improved forest management initiative in Waldenburg, Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, covering 1,107 hectares of commercially managed forest.
Forests are one of the most important natural carbon sinks in Europe. However, commercial harvesting - even when sustainably managed - limits the amount of carbon that remains stored in standing trees. Climate change increases the stress as drought, pests and storms, mean forest managers must balance in demand timber production, with the need to strengthen ecosystem resilience and long-term carbon storage.
The Solution
The project increases carbon sequestration by committing to harvest below legally permitted levels, allowing additional biomass to remain standing. This generates approximately 3,769 tCO₂e annually for the voluntary market. Certified under ISO 14064-2 and verified by TÜV NORD, the project combines carbon storage with biodiversity enhancement and climate adaptation funding.
