About this Project
The Problem
High-altitude forests in Austria are increasingly vulnerable to climate change. Rising temperatures, prolonged drought, storms, and bark beetle outbreaks are weakening monoculture spruce stands, reducing biodiversity and long-term carbon storage potential. Steep terrain and limited accessibility make sustainable management costly, creating financial pressure to prioritise short-term timber extraction.
The Solution
Through improved forest management, the project transitions vulnerable stands into mixed, climate-adapted forests that store carbon more securely over time. Carbon finance supports measures such as stand diversification, natural regeneration, and structural enhancement to increase biodiversity and ecological stability. By strengthening protective forest functions and investing in long-term resilience, this project helps safeguard carbon stocks while delivering broader environmental and socio-economic co-benefits.
