Landfill Gas to Electricity Project, Turkey

Location
Turkey

SDGs Contribution

Solution Type
Waste to Energy

Project Type
Carbon Reduction
Fact File
♻️ The project contributes to reducing Turkey's foreign dependency for electricity production by
generating renewable energy out of municipal wastes.
🏭 Before the project, the equivalent electricity was supplied by the grid, which is dominated by fossil fuel-based power plants.
↘️ The project is expected to reduce on average 79,423 tCO2e/year in the first 7 years of the crediting period (2021-2028).

About this Project
The Problem
Prior to the implementation of the project, the site did not have gas extraction or utilisation systems installed. The landfill gas (LPG), which consists mainly of methane, was directly emitted to the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
The Solution
The purpose of the project is to utilise LFG for electricity generation. Waste is collected and deposited to the landfill by the Municipality. The landfill gas is then extracted
via the collection system, treated to remove impurities and moisture, to avoid
corrosion in the engines, then flared and used to produce electricity.
