Landfill Gas to Energy, China

Location
China

Capacity Installed
6.402 MW

Solution Type
Waste to Energy

Project Type
Carbon Reduction
Fact File
🔥 Methane is highly flammable, so capturing LFG also helps prevent fires at the landfill site. As well as being dangerous to people working on or living near the site, burning waste can release toxic materials, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
⚡ Total installed capacity: 6.402 MW.
☁️ Reduces landfill gas emissions and replaces fossil fuel powered energy resulting in an estimated emissions reduction of 155,699 tonnes CO2e per year.

About this Project
The Problem
China’s national grid is still heavily reliant on fossil fuels, with 63% of its electricity generation coming from coal in 2022. Burning fossil fuels releases GHGs into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
The Solution
Landfills are the 3rd largest producer of methane, a potent short-lived climate pollutant. Instead of letting landfill gases go to waste, the project collects and uses them to generate electricity for the national grid.
