About this Project
The Problem
The Mara Mangue Mangrove Restoration Initiative, in northern Brazil, aims to reverse ecosystem degradation by restoring mangrove habitats while strengthening the livelihoods of the communities that depend on them.
The coastline serves as critical habitat for Brazil's unique coastal wildlife which is under threat.
The Solution
This project aims to restore degraded areas within the Itapetininga Marine Extractive Reserve (RESEX). The focus is on supporting local fishing communities, protecting the habitats of endangered wildlife, and promoting sustainable livelihoods and conservation.
The community-led program will focus on reintroducing local species of mangrove, alongside the implementation of erosion-control measures designed to stabilise coastal and riverbank habitats and encourage natural mangrove recovery. The initiative actively involves four local communities, responsible for seed collection, nursery management, planting, and monitoring. Community members, including fishers and shellfish harvesters, will also receive training in sustainable resource management.
By combining ecosystem restoration, community livelihoods, and environmental education, the project aims to strengthen coastal resilience, enhance biodiversity, and empower local communities to sustainably manage their natural resources.
