About this Project
The Problem
The forests of northern Wisconsin's Washburn County, have been subject to heavy industrial logging since early 20th century.
This has had a devastating impact on the environment, and has caused severe soil erosion, water damage and even forest fires.
The Solution
Washburn County project redirects forest management toward lower harvest intensity, allowing carbon stocks to grow above baseline.
Rather than returning to that extractive past, the project lets native Aspen, Pine, Swamp conifer and Northern Hardwood stands keep maturing. A 40-year no-harvest commitment trades short-term timber revenue for durable, third-party-audited carbon storage and biodiversity co-benefits.
Unlike private IFM projects, there's no owner who can walk away - county governance and a 40-year ACR agreement lock in the commitment institutionally. As public land, there is no risk of exit.
